Analysis and experiment of controllability of magnetorheological fluids based on micro-pipeline

Yongqing SU, Yikuan SONG, Jiguang YUE

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2009, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 339-344 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0048-3

Abstract: The controllability of the magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) flowing through a micro-pipeline is analyzed. The coupled formulas for MRF are deduced by analyzing the property of the flow field and magnetic field. Then, the relationship between the flow speed of MRF and the special shear stress under the effect of the magnetic field is founded. The model of the MRF and micro-pipeline is established by using multi-physics software of Comsol, the curve of - in an ideal condition is attained by modifying parameters, and by adding the boundary condition of the model. This paper provides a theoretical proof of the controllability of MRF flowing through the micro-pipeline and explores MRF’s application on the micro-drive and control field.

Combined static mixers for high viscous fluids mixing

Zhenhao XI, Weizhen SUN, Ling ZHAO, Zhaoyan LIU

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 93-96 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0112-x

Abstract: A new static mixer Cross-over-Disc has been invented to strip off the boundary layer and to make strong radial mixing. The pressure drop of Cross-over-Disc is 12—26 times as large as that of empty pipe with equivalent diameter and length. The mixing performance of Cross-over-Disc with 14 elements has been investigated in the viscosity range of 190—250 Pa?s by decoloration method, and the gray analysis of images shows that mixing inhomogeneity is about 7.5% and 9.4% for the mixing ratio of 5∶1 and 10∶1, respectively. Furthermore, mixing inhomogeneity for a combination of static mixing elements (four from Cross-over-Disc and three pairs from Sulzer-type) can be decreased to 2.1%—3.1% within a reasonable range of pressure drop.

Unit commitment using dynamic programming–an exhaustive working of both classical and stochastic approach

Balasubramaniyan SARAVANAN, Surbhi SIKRI, K. S. SWARUP, D. P. KOTHARI

Frontiers in Energy 2013, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 333-341 doi: 10.1007/s11708-013-0259-5

Abstract: In the present electricity market, where renewable energy power plants have been included in the power systems, there is a lot of unpredictability in the demand and generation. There are many conventional and evolutionary programming techniques used for solving the unit commitment (UC) problem. Dynamic programming (DP) is a conventional algorithm used to solve the deterministic problem. In this paper DP is used to solve the stochastic model of UC problem. The stochastic modeling for load and generation side has been formulated using an approximate state decision approach. The programs were developed in a MATLAB environment and were extensively tested for a four-unit eight-hour system. The results obtained from these techniques were validated with the available literature and outcome was good. The commitment is in such a way that the total cost is minimal. The novelty of this paper lies in the fact that DP is used for solving the stochastic UC problem.

Performance of a bi-layer solar steam generation system working at a high-temperature of top surface

Jinxin ZHONG, Congliang HUANG

Frontiers in Energy 2023, Volume 17, Issue 1,   Pages 141-148 doi: 10.1007/s11708-021-0725-4

Abstract: Many efforts have been focused on enhancing the vapor generation in bi-layer solar steam generation systems for obtaining as much pure water as possible. However, the methods to enhance the vapor temperature is seldom studied although the high-temperature vapor has a wide use in medical sterilization and electricity generation. In this work, to probe the high-temperature vapor system, an improved macroscopic heat and mass transfer model was proposed. Then, using the finite element method to solve the model, the influences of some main factors on the evaporation efficiency and vapor temperature were discussed, including effects of the vapor transport conditions and the heat dissipation conditions. The results show that the high-temperature vapor could not be obtained by enhancing the heat-insulating property of the bi-layer systems but by applying the optimal porosity and proper absorbers. This paper is expected to provide some information for designing a bi-layered system to produce high-temperature vapor.
